What is the MRCP?
The MRCP is a postgraduate medical qualification required by doctors in the UK who wish to enter specialty training in internal medicine and many other medical specialties.
It is awarded jointly by the three Royal Colleges of Physicians across the UK and is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous postgraduate medical assessments. It is taken by both UK-trained doctors and international medical graduates (IMGs) seeking to demonstrate their clinical competence to a recognised standard. For full guidance on the exam, please visit the MRCP UK website.
MRCP Exam Format
The MRCP consists of three parts: Part 1, Part 2 Written, and PACES (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills).
Part 1 is a written exam consisting of two papers of 100 best-of-five (BOF) multiple choice questions each, with candidates given 3 hours per paper. It covers a broad range of topics including cardiology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, neurology, and clinical pharmacology. Passing Part 1 is a prerequisite for sitting Part 2.
Part 2 Written follows a similar format but tests more complex clinical reasoning and decision-making across the same specialty areas. PACES is the practical component, assessing candidates through a series of clinical stations covering history taking, physical examination, communication skills, and clinical reasoning.
How to Prepare for the MRCP Part 1 and 2
Preparation for the MRCP needs to be structured and sustained given the breadth and depth of what is assessed.
For Part 1 and Part 2 Written, high-volume question practice is the most effective strategy. Working through best-of-five questions regularly builds the clinical pattern recognition that the exam rewards. Spend time reviewing explanations carefully for both correct and incorrect answers, as this is where the most consolidation happens.
Use targeted reading alongside your question practice to address knowledge gaps as you identify them, with particular attention to clinical guidelines and pharmacology, which are consistently high-yield across both written papers.
Taking timed mock papers under exam conditions is one of the most valuable things you can do in the weeks leading up to the exam. It builds pacing, reduces anxiety on the day, and highlights topic areas that need further attention.
